In a study that was published by University of Toronto Press aptly named Catastrophic Injuries in Sports and Recreation: Causes and Prevention – A Canadian Study in 2008, it was revealed that from 2000 to 2001, snowmobiling was the most common cause of winter recreation and sports injuries. It was also revealed through this study that the overall snowmobiling injury rate for people who use snowmobiles in Ontario is 3.17%. Considering that other provinces in Canada also offer snowmobiling services to residents and visitors, this number is expected to rise.

The study revealed that in every 100, 000 snowmobile riders or users, 88 people are likely to suffer from devastating snowmobiling injury every year. During the time of the study, the number of serious accidents caused by snowmobiles was 290 and that 120 of these cases resulted in death. This means that almost 50% of people who suffer from serious accidents caused by snowmobiles most likely die.
It was also revealed that 33.4% of individuals who suffered from these serious accidents acquired head trauma while 25.5% of them acquired spinal injuries. These types of injuries are notorious for causing life-altering medical conditions that are often untreatable and irreversible such as permanent paralysis.
