How to use an EpiPen

Fact Checked

When dealing with anaphylaxis, an EpiPen is usually used. As a severe allergic reaction, anaphylaxis involves the airway, throat and the tissues all over the body. This is the reason why it is a condition that should not be ignored. Always bear in mind that the airway of an individual can close, lose consciousness or even lead to death in severe cases.

The treatment for anaphylaxis is fast with the help of an EpiPen. They are best described as adrenaline autoinjectors. It is best to read carefully the instructions located on the side of the EpiPen. Do not forget to inspect the fluid if it is clear and free from any floating debris. The EpiPen that will be used should not be expired. Additionally, it is available in two colors – green and orange. The green is for children up to 5 years old while the orange one is for children 5 years old and older.

Using the EpiPen

  • The first step is to remove the safety cap of the EpiPen
  • When holding the EpiPen, the correct way is with your thumb wrapped either on the front or around the side. Always remember that it is built with a needle that is spring loaded. Position it on the side of the leg of the individual. Once you press it, you will hear a click.
  • This will activate the needle and the medication is injected. Hold it in place for 10-15 seconds and remove it. Provide the area with a rub since it will effectively help with the introduction of adrenaline. Record the time the injection was given.
  • In case the individual did not respond to the medication in 5 minutes, a second injection can be given.
  • The lower part of the EpiPen is equipped with a needle guard. It basically covers the needle once the medication has been injection. This makes it safer by removing the sharp. This is the reason why you have to put your thumb around the front.

In some cases, the EpiPen is not properly used. What usually happens is that some remove the small blue cap at the end where they see a hole and believe it is where the needle is. If this is the case, they turn the EpiPen over and place their thumb on the orange end, thus injecting their own thumb. The injected adrenaline can lead to the constriction of the blood vessels and individuals will suffer from a condition that is quite comparable to frostbite. In rare cases, some can even end up losing their thumb from misusing the EpiPen.

As part of the first aid care for individuals suffering from an anaphylaxis, it is important that you are careful when using an EpiPen if the individuals require assistance. Once the EpiPen has been administered, it is still important to call emergency assistance right away.
