Looking at the risk factors of heart disease.
Heart disease, while genetics are still involved, remain a largely lifestyle-based disease. The most common heart disease is CAD – coronary artery disease. In CAD, the flow through vessels that supply cardiac tissue with blood, the coronary arteries, become sluggish because of deposits of plaque. Plaque is made up of fat and inflammatory cells that adhere to the walls of the vessel. The plaque grows in size, the vessel becomes more and more occluded, making blood flow even slower. As the heart muscle receives less and less oxygenated blood, it can cause chest pain and the heart can stop functioning normally.
The statistics
There are many factors that contribute to the deposits of plaque in the blood vessels, such as an unhealthy diet and lack of exercise. Smoking also one of the biggest risk factors in developing a cardiovascular problem.
- Smoking – In 2012, 21 percent of men and 16 percent of women older than 18 years old are smokers, despite progress on educating the masses about the dangerous of smoking and second-hand smoke.
- From 2009 to 2010, only less than 1 percent of Americans met 4 out of 5 dietary goals (more fruits and vegetables, less fat, less salt, less sugar).
- Almost 35 percent of American adults are obese (with a body mass index greater than or equal to 30). Among children during the same time period, 32 percent were overweight or obese.
- According to date collected between 2007 and 2010, 33 percent of American adults older than 20 years old had hypertension. That amounts to almost 80 million Americans with high blood pressure.
But these are only numbers. The real danger is what happens when all these risk factors convalesce and cause a heart disease. Cardiac arrest is the biggest complication of a heart problem, or a condition where the heart stops beating. Prolonged ischemia of the cardiac tissue can cause a heart attack, or even a sudden event like a hypertensive crisis.
