Did You Know?

Choking

Choking is a very dangerous emergency that is caused by an object (food, small toys, etc.) blocking the flow of air to the lungs. Because air cannot get into the lungs, the lungs can filter oxygen from the air to the bloodstream. Without oxygen, the tissues in our body begin to die – this is very dangerous for the brain, which can only last 7-10 minutes without oxygen before irreversible tissue death occurs.

The universal sign for choking is pointing or hands around the throat. If a person doesn’t give this signal but appears to be choking, look for the following:

  • inability to speak
  • trouble breathing
  • inability to cough/remove the object lodged in the airway
  • skin – particularly the lips and on the face – turning blue (cyanosis) to gray
  • loss of consciousness
