Management of headache above the right ear

Headache is one common complaint that can go away on its own but some cases require medical care. Pain in the head can start from the brain itself or the tissues that partly covers the skull such as the skin and muscles. It can be a pain from adjacent organs. Some headaches occur for a short time and recede after a while such as a day or two. Headaches can be chronic and persists for days and weeks and it can be all over the head or one sided.

Sharp pain in head above the right ear can occur due to various reasons. Pain can be mild to moderate and sometimes there is severe shooting pain that causes discomfort to the person affected such as his/her daily activities. Headaches above the right ear can happen during night which keeps the person awake throughout the night.

Causes of headaches above the right ear

Unilateral pain in the head above the right ear can be a symptom of an ear disorder or it can originate from the brain. Some of the possible causes for this type of pain in the head include the following:

  • Nummular headaches can be felt in some parts of the scalp and head. It can be experienced above and behind the ear and the skin is tender when touched.
  • Carotid artery dissection can cause one sided pain in the head behind and above the ear. If the right flank of the carotid artery is cut up, it will lead to pain above the ear in the head which is usually piercing and abrupt and occurs after a traumatic injury in the neck.
  • An infection of the mastoid bone which is part of the skull bone. It is found just behind the ear and an infection in the middle ear causes mastoiditis where pain can be felt behind the ear.

Treatment of headaches in the upper right ear

  • If the person has tension headache, provide him/her with over-the-counter pain and anti-inflammatory medications to help lessen the symptoms.
  • If the tension headaches frequently recur, perform yoga, massage therapy or acupuncture to reduce the symptoms.
  • Apply a warm compress over the affected area to help minimize the sharp shooting pain if it caused by nummular or tension headache.
  • Dissection of carotid artery entails medical help. Those with this condition suffer from stroke and given medication for thinning the blood in order to prevent a stroke.
  • Avoid consuming alcohol and caffeinated drinks.

  1. I have this. I have had it for ten days and it is a sharp stabbing pain. I keep rubbing it and taking bayer aspirin and ibroprophin but it’s still there. I feel a lump of muscle that is in a knot.

My wife felt it last night all of a sudden just above righ ear, and it was severe , she was in depression since last three days, and my high doubt was that it must be high blood pressure , I have given her a tablet to lower the blood pressure and rushed to the doctor, where he has given tablets for muscle relaxation and blood pressure, on the way to doctor , since she already had a tablet, the pain became bearable, until we came back she was a bit better , I asked her to sleep well and dont think about anything , she is sleeping now its early morning and while searching about causes of pain, I landed here

  3. Small pupil like bums on face , facial pain , head pain right side , painfull to the touch, eye strain, fatigue, comes and go’s taste disorder, hard to manage behavior, irritability, sinus, tempole pain, seeing black spots, ear ache, left side chest pain, no pasionts to read any thing

  4. I’ve had this thing for a long time and right now it feels like its the worst its ever been. Its tender to touch the top of my head where the pain originates from and this is the first time that the pain started shooting to my ear. Is there anything i can do to ease this pain. Make it go away.
