Coronary artery disease (CAD) is one of the most dangerous lifestyle-related cardiac conditions. CAD is a heart disease where the vessels (coronary arteries) that supply the heart with oxygenated blood become blocked with deposits called plaque. Plaque is made up of fatty deposits and inflammatory cells that attach to the damaged areas. These deposits slow the flow of blood through that vessel, causing tissue hypoxia in the cardiac muscle. Without enough oxygen, the heart starts to malfunction, leading to eventual cardiac arrest.

What causes coronary artery disease?

CAD is largely lifestyle-based, meaning that it is caused by unhealthy lifestyle choices. The same factors that contribute to hypertension and other cardiac diseases, primarily:

  • Diet high in fat and salt
  • Sedentary lifestyle with no exercise
  • Smoking

Genetics also factor in when it comes to cardiac disease, but typically CAD is caused by the factors mentioned above. As rescuers who have been taught about what causes heart disease, it is part of your responsibility to do health teaching when you can. It will help a lot if more people are aware of what can cause heart problems.

Statistics

First Aid Training Room in Calgary
Las Vegas CPR training rooms are spacious and airconditioned, outfitted with the latest training equipment.

Currently, over 600,000 deaths can be attributed to heart disease. Almost half of that is actually due to heart attacks. This is can be seen in over 400,000 heart attacks that happen outside of the hospital. Even if the AHA and its affiliates train millions of people each year in CPR, the results of a survey showed that 70 percent of respondents did not know how to properly react to a cardiac emergency.

Learning CPR is everyone’s responsibility, not just if you work in healthcare. Since most of heart attacks happen out of a health care set up, you can surmise that they typically happen in homes – where the victims are someone’s parent, sibling, or child. It helps to be prepared for different emergencies, health conditions included.

At Las Vegas CPR, there are five training programs offered: three basic and two advanced courses. We offer re-certification for three of those programs as well. You can visit the website for a list of available classes and schedules.
