Diabetes: Type 2

The most commonly known type of diabetes is diabetes type 2. Other names for this are adult-onset diabetes and non-insulin-dependent diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition caused by an unhealthy lifestyle and diet. When the glucose level in the blood is too high (due to overeating, or eating too much high-glucose food), the pancreas becomes damaged. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas to regulate the amount of glucose in the blood. With diabetes type 2, the pancreas isn’t producing enough insulin to keep up with the body’s intake of glucose. The excess sugar can cause damage to vessels and organs, as well as slow tissue healing.
