Enrolment can be coursed through the website.

To complete enrolment and sign-up, students can use the form on the Fort McMurray website. Other ways to sign up are through e-mail, telephone call, and walk-in during business hours in any of the facilities in Alberta.

Course fees are the cheapest in the area.

Fees are paid in full during enrolment so students don’t have to worry about expenses during training. Fees include taxes, certification, and workplace approved training manuals. Should a student be unable to complete a program, he or she is entitled to a full, refund, provided a 72-hour notice is given.

CPR and first aid programs are taught by workplace approved certified instructors.

First aid programs last 14-16 hours long and teach students how to recognize and react to variety of injuries and emergency situations. The course curriculum includes topics such as wound care, cardiovascular resuscitation (CPR), automated external defibrillation (AED), the emergency medical services system. AEDs are machines that supply electrical shock to the heart through pads attached to the chest. Stand-alone CPR/AED classes are also available. There are three levels: A, C, and HCP; they last 4, 5, and 6 hours long.

Private instructors can be booked for special training.

All Fort McMurray First Aid instructors are certified by St Mark James to assure high quality training. Instructors can book private instructors for special training at home or for events like employee workshops and conferences.

Recertification is available twice a week.

To pass, students are required to have at least 75 percent on the written exam, complete attendance, and good skill demonstration. Certificate cards are awarded to students who are able to pass and complete a class. Wall-mount certificates are available upon request.

  • Certificates are only valid for three years. Recertification classes allow renewal of expiring or near-expiry certificates. Standard first aid recertification is 8 hours long, inclusive of CPR level C recertification.

Shock

Shock is often a result of some form of trauma, heatstroke, allergic reaction, burns, and even poisoning. It occurs when there is decreased blood volume circulating the body and supplying oxygen to the major organs, most commonly seen in accidents that cause severe blood loss.
